Schubert will be presenting its lightline Cartonpacker to the public for the first time in America

After more than a year and a half of absence at trade fairs, the Schubert Group, based in Crailsheim, Germany, is looking forward to returning to Pack Expo in Las Vegas. Since the beginning of the Corona pandemic in the spring of 2020, this will be the first ‘live’ trade fair presence on the North American continent for the packaging machine manufacturer. Due to increasingly growing customer demand for advanced automation and flexibility in packaging machines, the innovation leader in packaging technology will be presenting its compact lightline Cartonpacker to a North American audience for the first time in Las Vegas. The preconfigured machine designed and built for the fast and flexible erecting, filling and closing of cartons and boxes will be deployed by a North American contract manufacturer of ice cream bars and ice cream sticks following the trade fair.

Schubert will be presenting its lightline Cartonpacker to the public for the first time in America. The machine on display is part of an entire secondary and tertiary packaging line for contract manufacturer Hudsonville Creamery & Ice Cream.

“Covid-19 has resulted in significant change and real social challenges over the last eighteen months. However, prudent crisis management throughout the Schubert Group allows us to look back on a very positive 2020 financial year overall. Fortunately, the pandemic did not slow down the further development of our product innovations, and demand from our North American customers for state-of-the-art packaging technology with a high degree of flexibility and automation has been strong,” explains Hartmut Siegel, Managing Director at Schubert North America. The Schubert North American sales team, represented by locations in Toronto, Canada, and Dallas, Texas, as well as the subsidiary’s headquarters in Charlotte, NC, is now looking forward to face-to-face dialogue with customers, interested parties and other industry colleagues. This year, as a highlight, Schubert will be presenting its compact lightline Cartonpacker for the first time at an American trade fair. The machine on display is part of an entire secondary and tertiary packaging line for contract manufacturer Hudsonville Creamery & Ice Cream and will be installed there after the fair. The product to be packaged with this solution in the future is from the Yasso ice cream brand, which is widely-known and extremely popular in North America.

Compact and efficient packaging with Schubert’s lightline series
Schubert’s lightline series consists of preconfigured packaging machines that are available immediately and can be delivered at short notice. These machines master standardised packaging tasks with great efficiency and high quality. The extremely compact machines enable customers to react quickly to market trends, at attractive investment costs, with a long service life and easy commissioning on site. As one of three lightline variants, the lightline Cartonpacker flexibly packs products with specific packaging formats into cartons in the smallest possible space. The system that Schubert built for Hudsonville comprises four identical cartoners connected in series and two lightline Cartonpackers. The flow-wrapped ice cream treats are first packed into 4-packs in the cartoners, followed by the packing of eight 4-packs each into a shipping carton in the two lightline Cartonpackers.

Schubert will be presenting one of these two lightline Cartonpackers at the exhibition stand. “We were able to convince the customer of the machine’s exceptional flexibility. Because Hudsonville produces various brands of ice cream bars and ice cream sticks on behalf of third parties, flexibility is key to the versatile and profitable use of a new packaging machine,” explains Stefan Hoffmann, the responsible Sales Account Manager at Schubert North America. Visitors to the trade fair in Las Vegas will experience for themselves the advantages of the lightline machines and the consulting expertise of the experts from the Schubert North American team.

Schubert north america impresses with outstanding service and on-time delivery during the pandemic

Expert consulting and excellent local service are also what secured Schubert North America’s sales growth over the last year in spite of COVID-19. Quick commissioning thanks to the preconfigured systems as well as the high degree of digitalisation during machine handovers to customers also played a major role. The attendance times of Schubert technicians and other service personnel at customer premises were, of course, reduced to a Corona regulation-compliant minimum. Furthermore, in spite of the unique circumstances, Schubert North America was able to meet all delivery deadlines with its customers at all times, so that they themselves were flexible enough to be able to deliver to their own customers on time.

Special exhibition with the forefather of pick & place robots

Another trade fair highlight is the exhibition of the world’s first ever pick & place robot in the historic "Pack to the future" pavilion at this year’s Pack Expo. “Roby” was developed by company founder Gerhard Schubert himself. As early as in 1970 and modelled on human anatomy and motion, Schubert began developing packaging machines that stood out with simple mechanics, high-level intelligence and the use of ideally matching tools. Strictly speaking, the celebrated 1981 Roby was an early pick & place robot. It would take another 15 years of development before the first official Schubert picker line was deployed: With the patented counterflow principle and fully automatic individual picking from running production, it was Roby that ushered in a new era in packaging technology at the interpack 1984 with its use in the world’s first chocolate packing line. This, along with many further development milestones, has since earned the packaging machine manufacturer from Crailsheim its position as global market leader in this segment.

Gerhard Schubert GmbH at the Fachpack 2024 trade fair in Nuremberg

With the new EU Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) along with increasing demands for climate protection across the board, the packaging industry will have more than enough to discuss at this year’s Fachpack.‘Transition in Packaging’ is the event’s fitting motto from 24 to 26 September 2024 in Nuremberg. Visitors to the fair will have an opportunity to find out about the full range of sustainable, cost-effective solutions that Schubert, the packaging machine manufacturer from Crailsheim, has developed for consumer goods manufacturers at Stand 244 in Hall 1. As an example for the new ‘Power Compact’ machine concept – high output in the smallest space with lean yet high-quality technology – a bar packer with a single-lane erector and feeding via the Comfort Feeder will be in operation at the stand. The Schubert experts will also be demonstrating how further sustainability potential through the interaction between packaging and machine technology can be harnessed.

Schubert at Automation UK 2024

Last year, Automation UK took place for the first time in Coventry, England. As a result of its resounding success, the trade fair for automation and robotics is now entering its second round – and will be taking place this year on 18 and 19 June. Schubert UK Ltd will, of course, be participating once again. Schubert’s UK sales location was not only an exhibitor last year, but it is also a co-founder of Automation UK. In the CBS Arena at Stand F10, the British team, led by Mark Stepney, will be providing information on the Germany-based company’s latest highly flexible, efficient, and resource-saving solutions for packaging products of all kinds and from all sectors. This year, visitors to the Schubert stand will have an opportunity to view a tog.519 cobot live and in action. At Automation UK, the mobile robot will be demonstrating how it can pick & place unsorted products at speeds of up to 90 cycles per minute using the AI-supported vision system.
